Soil types and classifications are one of the determinant factors in the selection of the building’s sub-structure, along with the weight of the structure to be imposed upon that foundation. In those cases where adequate bearing pressure is lacking and conventional cast-in-place foundations are not suit-able, there are many other types of underground structures available to the design engineer.
